Tropical Storm Isaias Could Become a Hurricane

Tropical Storm Isaias formed over the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday and quickly gained strength.

By Wednesday afternoon, its maximum sustained winds had reached 65 mph, up from 40 mph earlier in the day.

The National Hurricane Center forecast Isaias to reach hurricane strength by Thursday morning and reach the coast late Friday or early Saturday.

The storm is moving east-northeast but is expected to turn north toward the U.S. coast.

Current forecasts place the potential landfall zone from southeastern Louisiana to the western Florida Panhandle, with the exact location still subject to change.

Isaias could become the first Atlantic hurricane of 2026.

If it reaches hurricane strength on October 8, it would tie a 121-year record for the latest first hurricane of an Atlantic season.

Storm Surge, Flooding and Tornadoes Pose Major Risks

The biggest concerns are expected along the northern Gulf Coast, where Isaias could bring dangerous coastal flooding, heavy rainfall and powerful winds.

A storm surge watch has been issued from the mouth of the Mississippi River eastward to Yankeetown, Florida, while hurricane watches cover parts of the northern Gulf Coast.

Storm surge could push seawater into low-lying coastal communities, while heavy rain may cause flash flooding both near the coast and farther inland.

Forecast rainfall could reach several inches in the hardest-hit areas, adding to the risk of rapid flooding.

Tornadoes are another concern as Isaias moves inland. Rainbands around tropical systems can produce brief but dangerous tornadoes, even away from the storm's center.

Strong winds could also cause power outages and damage to homes, trees and infrastructure.

Gulf Coast Communities Prepare as Isaias Approaches

Officials across the Gulf Coast are taking precautions as the storm approaches.

Governors in Florida and Alabama have declared states of emergency, while local authorities are preparing emergency supplies, flood equipment, and response crews.

In Gulf Shores, Alabama, the National Shrimp Festival was canceled because of the expected severe weather.

Communities are also preparing for possible flooding and power disruptions as conditions worsen.

The storm is also affecting offshore energy operations.

Shell and Chevron have reduced production and moved some personnel ashore as Isaias approaches the Gulf's oil and gas infrastructure.

Residents in the projected path should secure outdoor items, prepare for possible power outages, and follow local emergency instructions.
