A fall heat wave is bringing summer-like temperatures to the central and eastern United States, with highs reaching the 90s in several areas. But the unusual warmth will not last long. A strong cold front is expected to bring a sharp temperature drop by the weekend. Here’s what residents need to know about the changing weather.

Fall heat wave conditions are bringing summer-like temperatures to the central and eastern United States in mid-October, with highs reaching the 90s in several areas.

The unusual fall heat wave is expected to ease later this week as a strong cold front moves south and east, bringing a sharp temperature drop, chilly mornings and possible frost by the weekend.

More than 20 states are expected to experience above-average temperatures, affecting over 250 million Americans, according to FOX Weather.

A broad area of high pressure is keeping warm air in place, pushing temperatures into the upper 80s and 90s across parts of the Midwest, Southern Plains and Southeast.

In some southern areas, high humidity could make conditions feel hotter than 100°F.

Several major cities, including St. Louis, Chicago, Atlanta and Charlotte, could see their hottest temperatures of the season so far.

Forecasters also expect hundreds of daily high-temperature records to be tied or broken through Wednesday, October 14.

However, the heat won't last.

A developing dip in the jet stream will help push a cold front across the central and eastern United States later this week.

Temperatures could fall by as much as 40°F compared with earlier in the week in some locations.

Overnight lows are forecast to drop into the 30s and lower 40s in parts of the country.

The Upper Midwest and Central Great Plains could see morning frost, while some inland areas of Pennsylvania, New York and northern New England may experience temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s.

Sunday morning could bring the coldest conditions of the season so far for millions of Americans.

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, afternoon highs are expected to reach the low 90s during the workweek, well above typical mid-October temperatures in the low 80s.

A cold front is forecast to pass through late Friday, bringing breezier conditions and a temperature drop of around 10–15°F.

Highs on Saturday may stay below 80°F, while Sunday morning lows could fall into the mid-50s.

The front is also expected to bring little or no rain to parts of southern Louisiana and southwestern Mississippi.

Continued dry weather could worsen drought conditions in these areas, despite the approaching change in temperature.

Although cooler weather will provide relief from the unusual heat, the transition could bring frost risks to some communities.

Residents should follow local forecasts as the front moves through, especially where overnight temperatures may approach freezing.
