Hurricane Simon is tracking along Mexico’s Pacific coast, bringing the threat of heavy rain, flooding, and dangerous coastal conditions. The storm’s changing path has raised concerns for communities near Puerto Vallarta, even as its intensity begins to weaken. Meanwhile, Simon’s remnants could fuel days of rain and increase flood risks across parts of the U.S. Great Plains. Here’s the latest on the storm’s impacts and forecast!

Hurricane Simon Slams Mexico’s Pacific Coastline

Hurricane Simon approached Mexico’s west-central coast as a powerful Category 3 storm after reaching Category 4 strength over the Pacific.

The storm had maximum sustained winds of around 125 mph (200 km/h), while its eye remained offshore.

Forecasters expected the system to approach the Puerto Vallarta area around midnight and continue affecting the region through Monday, October 12.

The states of Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Michoacán face significant weather risks as Simon moves near the coastline.

Heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding and mudslides, particularly in mountainous areas where water can quickly run downhill.

Some locations could even receive as much as 30 inches of rain.

Strong winds and dangerous coastal conditions also threaten beaches, ports and nearby communities.

Even if the storm’s center stays offshore, its rainbands and winds can still cause damage along the coast.

Evacuations and Flood Risks Raise Concerns Across Mexico

Mexican authorities have stepped up emergency preparations as Hurricane Simon threatens coastal communities.

Officials have ordered evacuations in vulnerable areas, suspended classes in parts of Jalisco, and deployed emergency personnel to support residents.

Businesses in Puerto Vallarta have boarded up windows, while authorities have urged people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

The threat extends beyond wind damage. Prolonged rainfall could overwhelm drainage systems, flood roads and isolate communities.

Steep terrain also increases the risk of landslides, especially where heavy rain saturates the soil.

Coastal flooding and powerful waves add further danger for people living near the shoreline.

The storm’s changing intensity does not mean the danger has passed.

Rainfall can remain severe even as a hurricane weakens, and floodwaters may continue rising after the strongest winds move away.

Hurricane Simon’s Remnants Could Bring Flooding to the U.S.

Simon’s impacts may continue after the hurricane weakens and moves inland.

Moisture associated with the storm could help fuel repeated rounds of rain and thunderstorms across the central United States from Tuesday into Thursday.

The forecast highlights several areas to watch:

  • Texas and Oklahoma: Storms could bring heavy downpours and isolated flash flooding, with severe weather also possible across the Panhandles.

  • Kansas and Missouri: Repeated rainfall could increase flooding concerns, particularly in areas with poor drainage or saturated ground.

  • Illinois and the Upper Midwest: The rain threat could shift eastward later in the week.

Hurricane Simon is forecast to bring widespread rainfall totals of around 1–2 inches across a broad corridor from northern Texas to Illinois, with localized downpours potentially producing higher amounts.

The exact location and timing of the heaviest rain may change as the weather pattern develops.

Residents across the Plains and Midwest should monitor National Weather Service alerts, especially if thunderstorms repeatedly pass over the same area.

Avoid flooded roads and move to higher ground if flash-flood warnings are issued.

While Simon’s weakening may reduce the immediate threat from hurricane-force winds, its remaining moisture could still contribute to hazardous weather thousands of miles from Mexico’s Pacific coast.
