Thunderstorm in DC With 60 MPH Gusts Leaves Thousands Without Power

A powerful thunderstorm in DC brought dangerous weather conditions to the Washington metropolitan area Thursday evening, knocking down trees, damaging power lines, and leaving tens of thousands of residents without electricity.

The severe weather system moved rapidly from west to east across the region, producing torrential rainfall and wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. As the storms intensified, reports of fallen trees, downed utility wires, and blocked roadways emerged throughout the District, Maryland, and Northern Virginia.

Thunderstorm in DC causes power outages

One of the hardest-hit areas was Northern Virginia, where Dominion Energy reported that approximately 56,000 customers lost power during the height of the storm.

Utility crews worked through the night to assess damage and restore service, though officials warned that some customers could remain without electricity until Friday evening.

According to a Dominion Energy spokesperson, crews encountered widespread damage, including fallen trees resting on power lines, broken utility poles, and damaged cross arms.

Additional contractors and crews from neighboring regions were deployed to accelerate restoration efforts.

While the most severe phase of the thunderstorm in DC ended by late evening, meteorologists cautioned that scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms could continue through midnight.

Warm and humid conditions overnight were also expected to create areas of fog across the region.

More Storms Expected Friday

Residents may not have much time to recover before another round of active weather arrives. Forecasters say a cold front moving toward the Mid-Atlantic is expected to trigger additional thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening.

Some of these storms could become severe, bringing damaging wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rainfall.

Temperatures will remain dangerously high despite the unsettled weather pattern. Highs on Friday are forecast to climb into the mid-to-upper 90s, with humidity levels making it feel even hotter.

Meteorologists warn that the combination of extreme heat and storm potential could create hazardous conditions throughout the day.

Heat Impacts Force School Activity Changes

Before the storms arrived, oppressive heat had already disrupted normal activities across the region. Heat index values approached 100 degrees Thursday afternoon in parts of the Washington area.

In response, Fairfax County Public Schools canceled all outdoor activities scheduled between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., including recess periods, athletic practices, and after-school events.

Meanwhile, Montgomery County Public Schools announced that Wootton High School closed early at noon due to a burst pipe that left the building without air conditioning during the heat wave.

Weekend Forecast Brings Brief Relief

The weather pattern is expected to improve somewhat on Saturday as the cold front moves offshore. Sunshine will return to much of the region, and humidity levels will decrease noticeably.

Saturday temperatures are expected to hover around 90 degrees, but lower dew points should make conditions feel more comfortable compared to Thursday and Friday. Most locations are expected to remain dry, although a brief isolated shower cannot be completely ruled out.

Beach communities along the Delmarva coast, including Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, and Ocean City, should enjoy favorable conditions with sunshine, lower humidity, and temperatures in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

Storm Chances Return Sunday

The break in active weather may be short-lived. By Sunday, warmer and more humid air will begin returning to the region. High temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s and lower 90s.

Although much of Sunday should stay dry, an approaching weather system could trigger isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

Forecast models indicate rain chances will increase Sunday night, raising the possibility of another round of unsettled weather heading into next week.
