Latest Updates on the Nepal Flash Flood

The Nepal flash flood that struck the country’s northern border region on August 26 has killed at least 157 people in Nepal and three more in neighboring Tibet, bringing the reported death toll to at least 160. 

Hundreds of people remain missing after floodwaters and debris swept through communities in Rasuwa and other affected districts near the Tibet border. 

Among those unaccounted for are hundreds of tourists, including 341 foreign nationals, many of whom were traveling toward Mount Kailash.

The disaster has caused widespread destruction across the mountainous region. Floodwaters and debris damaged or destroyed homes, roads and bridges, while hydropower facilities were also affected. 

Nepalese authorities reported damage to at least 19 bridges and about 40 kilometers of roads, severely disrupting transportation and access to affected communities.

• Death toll: At least 160 people have been killed, including 157 in Nepal and three in China’s Tibet region.

• People missing: Hundreds remain unaccounted for in both countries. China has reported 265 missing people in Gyirong County, while Nepal has reported hundreds missing in the affected areas.

• Missing tourists: Nepalese tourism authorities say 403 tourists are unaccounted for, including 341 foreign nationals.

• Infrastructure damage: At least 19 bridges and 40 kilometers of roads have been damaged or destroyed, making access to affected areas difficult.

• Villages affected: Fast-moving water, mud, rocks and debris swept through settlements along river valleys, destroying buildings and leaving some communities isolated.

• Hydropower projects: Several power facilities were damaged or swept away, adding to the disruption caused by the disaster.

• Tibet border crossing: The flooding also devastated the Gyirong border area on the Chinese side, cutting roads and communications and leaving hundreds unaccounted for.

• Rescue operation: Nepalese and Chinese authorities are continuing search-and-rescue operations, but damaged infrastructure, unstable terrain and heavy debris are slowing access to some areas.

• Further flooding risk: Authorities remain alert to the possibility of additional flooding as debris and blockages continue to affect waterways upstream.

More than 400 tourists missing

Nepal’s Tourism Board has reported 403 tourists missing or out of contact after the flash flood, including 341 foreign nationals and 62 Nepali tourists. 

Many were traveling toward Gosainkunda or Kailash Mansarovar, making the disaster especially concerning for international visitors. 

Here are the missing tourists by nationality: 

• India: 133–142 reported missing, depending on the latest agency tally. Nepal Tourism Board's later breakdown cited by local media gives 133.

• United States: 47 in the latest Nepal Tourism Board breakdown reported by local media.

• Australia: 34.

• United Kingdom: 33.

• Canada: 24.

• Malaysia: 19.

• Ukraine: 7.

• South Korea: Korean nationals/workers have also been reported missing; Guardian reported nine South Koreans in a later update.

• Russia: Russian nationals were among the wider group of missing foreign tourists, but I would not assign a number unless you have a current official tally. Local reporting says Russians were among nationals from more than 25 countries affected.

• Portugal: At least one Portuguese woman was reported missing by Portugal's foreign ministry.

• Italy: Italian authorities reported two Italian tourists and their guide stranded upstream from a landslide and receiving assistance; this should not automatically be described as “missing.”

• Belgium: If you retain Belgium in the list, use “Belgian nationals were also reported among those affected/missing” only if the latest official source confirms it. I would not give a number based on the current evidence.

What Caused the Nepal Flash Flood? 

The Nepal flash flood appears to have been triggered by a massive ice-and-rock avalanche near the Nepal-China border. 

Satellite imagery suggests that a large section of a glacier at about 5,200 meters collapsed into the Lhende River, sending ice, rocks and sediment downstream. 

The debris may have temporarily blocked the river before a sudden release produced a powerful flood surge.

An earthquake was initially suspected after seismic activity was detected in the area.

However, subsequent analysis indicated that the seismic signal was likely generated by the landslide itself rather than by a separate earthquake that triggered the disaster.

The region’s steep Himalayan terrain further amplified the damage.

The sudden surge carried large amounts of water, mud and debris through narrow valleys, leaving communities little time to react. 

Experts are also monitoring upstream blockages for the possibility of another dangerous surge.

Search and rescue efforts continue

Search and rescue operations are continuing across Nepal’s flood-hit areas as authorities work to locate hundreds of missing people, including foreign tourists. 

The Nepali Army, police and other emergency teams have been deployed to Rasuwa and surrounding districts, while helicopters are being used to reach people stranded by destroyed roads and bridges.

Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Office said 1,697 army personnel had been deployed, with another 656 on standby.

Six military helicopters have rescued 94 people, while civilian helicopters and ground teams have brought dozens more to safety. 

Thirteen injured people were also airlifted from Rasuwa to hospitals in Kathmandu.

Rescue efforts are also underway on the Chinese side of the border. China has mobilized hundreds of rescuers in Gyirong County, where three people have died and 265 remain missing. 

However, destroyed roads, heavy debris, unstable terrain and rising water are making access to some areas difficult.

Authorities remain on alert for further flooding as blockages in the river system could trigger another surge. 

Meanwhile, neighboring countries, UN agencies and humanitarian organizations are providing assistance as efforts to find survivors and account for missing people continue.
