Indy 500 Weather Forecast Calls for Possible Race-Day Rain

The Indy 500 weather forecast is becoming a major storyline ahead of one of the busiest weekends in motorsports, as rain threatens to disrupt both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday. 

Fans, teams and drivers are all keeping a close eye on changing conditions at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway, where unsettled weather could impact race schedules throughout the day and night.

The weather forecast of Indy 500

The 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 is set to begin at 12:45 p.m. ET, but forecasts continue to show a significant chance of rain during the event. Current projections call for temperatures beginning around 70 degrees with nearly a 45% chance of showers early in the afternoon. 

Despite the threat of rain, meteorologists believe the weather could improve during portions of the race, with partly sunny skies and temperatures rising close to 80 degrees.

According to the latest National Weather Service outlook, the heaviest rain is not expected to arrive until after 2 p.m. ET, potentially giving race organizers enough time to complete a large portion of the event before any delays become necessary. 

Forecast models also suggest lingering showers could clear out of the Indianapolis area between 4 and 6 p.m. ET, creating a possible window for better racing conditions later in the afternoon.

Weather delays are nothing new for the Indianapolis 500. Last year’s race was heavily impacted by thunderstorms that forced a delay of nearly four hours before drivers were finally able to take the green flag. 

Because of that recent history, officials and teams are preparing for the possibility of interruptions again this year if storms develop over the speedway.

The situation looks similarly uncertain for NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. 

Cloudy skies and scattered showers are expected throughout the evening, while cooler temperatures in the 70s could provide comfortable conditions if the rain stays away. However, hourly forecasts continue to show at least a 60% chance of rain during much of the scheduled race window.

Charlotte has already dealt with several weather-related issues this weekend after rain forced multiple postponements for Truck Series events. The nighttime format of the Coca-Cola 600 may create additional challenges because moisture and cooler evening temperatures can quickly affect track conditions once darkness arrives.

One of the drivers most affected by the unpredictable forecast is Katherine Legge, who plans to attempt the rare “Double Duty” challenge Sunday. She is scheduled to compete in the Indianapolis 500 before immediately traveling to North Carolina for the Coca-Cola 600 later that evening. 

Any major delay connected to the Indy 500 weather forecast could seriously tighten her already demanding schedule between the two races. On the other hand, weather delays in Charlotte could potentially give her extra time to arrive before NASCAR’s longest race begins.
