A massive California wildfire, named the Gifford Fire, is threatening more than 800 structures and has already injured three people as it tears through Los Padres National Forest in central California.

The fire has scorched over 129 square miles of land across Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, according to a U.S. Forest Service update.

Unfortunately, the fire is controlled by only 7%.

The blaze originated from at least four smaller fires that broke out Friday along State Route 166 between Santa Maria and Bakersfield.

The cause of these fires remains under investigation.

Fueled by steep, rugged terrain that even bulldozers can’t access, the wildfire is producing a massive smoke column visible across the region.

Officials warn that wildfire smoke poses health risks, with plumes expected to move toward southern and eastern parts of California.

The wildfire is threatening approximately 872 structures and has forced the closure of the highway in both directions east of Santa Maria, a city of about 110,000 residents in Santa Barbara County.

Located 65 miles northwest of Santa Barbara and 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles, the area is a hilly agricultural region known for its strawberry fields, vineyards, and iconic California live oaks and sycamore trees.

More than 1,900 firefighters are working to gain control, supported by aircraft and helicopters making water drops.

Two new base camps have been established to improve access to the fire perimeter and coordinate firefighting efforts.

Crews have made progress on the west, north, and east flanks while focusing on protecting homes and infrastructure to the south.

The wildfire has forced highway closures, disrupted ranching operations, and led to livestock evacuations.

Injuries include a motorist hospitalized with burns after escaping his vehicle as flames overtook it, and two contracted fire crew members hurt in an ATV accident.

Fire officials are bracing for worsening conditions as a warming, drying weather pattern is expected to persist through the weekend, with temperatures reaching 90–100°F by Thursday and Friday.

The fire continues to threaten local agriculture, including strawberry fields and vineyards, in this hilly region known for its natural oak and sycamore landscapes.
